My friends tell me I’m uber creative. That I think different. That I can take our entire conversation about something going on in their lives and bring it down into one sentence.
I call it dot-connecting and marvel at this amazing puzzle brain God has given me.
I’ve often joked that I can pack a three bedroom apartment into the trunk of a car. There’s just something about seeing everything all separate and knowing how it can beautifully fit together in unique and cohesive way.
As an artist who is also a person of faith, this way of dot-connecting is ever-present in my creative process. Rather than demand an artwork "be" something before the creative dance has even begun, instead of cluttering my mind with all those expectations of where I think a particular piece should land, I try to stay in a place of being, a state of becoming, all the while giving space for my dot-connecting self, that puzzle brain I’ve been blessed with, to commune with the great I AM above…and play in His Presence.
With each piece comes everything that was part of that creative dance with Him. Thoughts, emotions, discernment, wisdom, whispers, prayers, songs. I also know with absolute certainty that while I’m at play, God is doing a work within me. Whether He is imparting guidance for the day ahead, linking together an opportunity that is yet unseen, bringing to mind a friend to reach out too or simply pouring out His Love head to toe, it remains this mysterious inner working that also dot-connects and grows me in a spiritual way.
Said another way, playing in the Presence of God both feeds me and reveals me.
I’ve long believed that God already has someone in mind when I begin a new piece. Someone who needs everything He was sharing while we enjoyed the dance, things imbued in the layers and colors, materials and marks made when tools touch the work surface. It all travels with the art work to its new home to share and reveal in God’s good timing.
This is also why I usually have a smaller quantity of items in my shop at any given time. Because each is created when the Spirit moves me. Literally. I’m my creative best when I create out of that extraordinary and marvelous place of play - and not production.
Presence, play, purpose.
In every piece.
So if something you see here resonates with you or causes a deep down feeling that moves you or makes you laugh or smile or cry or even wonder, it’s quite possible that piece was meant for you right along and God had you in mind from the start. It would be my honor and joy for you to make it yours.
Blessings for a beautiful day,
